This is gold. Postscript on Harrison: He is infamous for sleeping through the Tiananmen Massacre (a few hundred meters from his Beijing Hotel bed): “It was that gooey kind of sleep….” he wrote. Oh well, we all get old. Doesn’t negate what you describe here.

Wasn't a reporter, right? Already had stopped when he took on the op-ed page. Once in my barn I heard automatic fire at night. Next time I saw the Marine who slept over at the other location I asked him if he had heard it too and were those machine guns. We both had done the same thing, stayed inside and went back to sleep, congratulating ourselves on having nothing to do with it.

81 years old. Yes, reporting (because emerita can do anything they want there). Had no business trying to report on a fast-moving story like that, but he was still a big name. Made for some welcome water cooler humor among us grunts. We weren’t allowed to sleep.
